Surest by UnitedHealthcare Provides a Novel Approach to Health Insurance

MINNETONKA, MN – Surest by UnitedHealthcare is an unique approach to health benefits that eliminates deductibles and gives customers with clear upfront cost information prior to treatment. Surest, which was first offered as Bind in 2016, has the greatest growth rate among UnitedHealthcare’s employer-sponsored plans.

Surest is available to organizations with self-funded health plans across the country through UnitedHealthcare. Surest plans are also available to UnitedHealthcare fully insured clients with 51 or more workers in 11 states (Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia), with the intention of expanding to five more by the end of 2022.

Over 150 businesses already use a Surest plan, with an increasing number adopting Surest as an option for the 2023 enrollment season this fall.

There are no deductibles or coinsurance: Surest plans help reduce financial obstacles to treatment by providing clear and transparent health care quality and cost data shown in the Surest app. This makes it easier for members to understand both their coverage and cost before obtaining care or arranging an appointment. Surest members used high-value and convenient care more frequently, including a 10X increase in virtual visits2, and were less likely to utilize low-value care (6% fewer emergency department visits1). Surest members choose high-quality health care providers with the lowest price for operations such as hip replacement or reflux surgery more than half of the time.

Surest plans allow users to check single, all-in costs for over 490 services before getting treatment. Members may be able to spend less out of pocket and obtain more effective treatments from quality care providers based on data-driven results, as established by national standardized standards. Having access to clear, upfront costs can assist customers avoid receiving several or unexpected invoices.

Designed for increased satisfaction and lower premiums: The Net Promoter Score® – a fundamental indicator of consumer satisfaction – was much higher among Surest plan participants than industry averages. 1 Employers who implemented Surest plans paid up to 15% less per member per month than high-deductible health plans, while members paid 44% less out of pocket.
